The henna plant has been used as a dye for thousands
of years. More commonly in the West, compounds
made from the roots are used to naturally give hair a
deep red or auburn color. The Middle East and India
have rich traditions in the use of dye made from the
leaves and stems applied to the skin in beautiful and
elaborate designs. This application is also called Mehndi.
The henna tattoo designs last until the skin exfoliates and replaces
itself, anywhere from one to three weeks. Duration
depends on the oiliness of complexion or place of
application. Designs tend to last the longest on the palms
of the hand and shortest on the chest, neck and face.
